Seed to Plate Program

Chef Vittorio started the “Seed to Plate
🍃🥗🌿🌱Thank you to everyone that came

Seed-to-Plate is a hands-on food-education program created by Vittorio Ettore, Chef Owner of Bistro 5.

2024 marks our 13th year gardening with  Ambrose Elementary School at the Sanborn House.
Each spring, we cultivate a variety of salad greens, which are sold at the restaurant to raise funds for the garden. Your participation helps keep this enriching program thriving.

By engaging schoolchildren in growing, studying, and consuming their own food, Seed to Plate fosters a lasting connection between children and their food. This program teaches them about the origins of food and the resources needed to grow it, promoting healthy eating habits and a lifelong appreciation for fresh produce.

Located at Winchester's Sanborn House Historical and Cultural Center, the Seed to Plate garden allows students to experience the satisfaction of planting, nurturing, and harvesting food. They also learn about the environmental benefits of composting and recycling. The program is available to fourth and fifth graders at Winchester's Ambrose School.

The Goal

To give children a comprehensive understanding of the plant life cycle—from germination to maturation. To educate them on harvesting the garden’s bounty and transforming it into delicious, nutritious meals.

To encourage students and their parents to consider the importance of preparing and eating food that is tasty, healthy, and nutritious. I firmly believe that when children gain this experience and share it with others, their appreciation and knowledge of plant science and the environment will flourish. More importantly, their eating habits will improve, addressing the growing issue of childhood obesity.
